At the Office of Minority Health Resource Center, we are dedicated to advancing health equity. The Senior Media and Communications Specialist is a key member of a team supporting the communications and outreach efforts of the HHS Office of Minority Health. The ideal candidate has experience in media relations and public health communications and the ability to develop persuasive and compelling content to drive engagement for a variety of audiences. The Senior Media and Communications Specialist is responsible for working closely with the Communications Manager to develop and execute integrated communications strategies, programs and activities for the HHS Office of Minority Health.

This position supports a federal contract at worksites located in Rockville, MD and Landover, MD.

The Senior Media and Communications Specialist:

  • Identifies opportunities to support agency's mission of advancing health equity through strategic communications and media relations
  • Expands visibility by cultivating new and existing relationships with media contacts and pitching story ideas to a variety of media outlets
  • Expands visibility by cultivating new and existing partners with federal and non-federal agencies
  • Provides tracking and strategic analysis of news coverage of relevant issues in traditional and new media
  • Provides technical assistance in media relations and other areas of communications and marketing expertise to internal and external constituents and partners
  • Drafts media plans and works collaboratively across divisions to identify opportunities to highlight the efforts of the HHS Office of Minority Health
  • Manages communications campaigns, projects, products and events from start to finish, working independently as well as collaboratively with the team
  • Supports and participates in the development and implementation of internal and external communications strategies, programs and initiatives
  • Manages a variety of internal, external and communications tasks to support leadership, including preparation of a range of digital communication strategies, integrated communications, publications, talking points, presentations, and other materials
  • Builds relationships and collaborates with leadership, staff, partners and others to amplify agency messages and engage audiences in the mission
  • Supports agency's growing social media presence as well as day-to-day operations of communications team by performing other duties, including writing, editing, proofreading and research

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (journalism, communications, public health, public policy, etc.)
  • 5 years minimum direct communications related experience, including media relations and communications campaigns and projects in a health or nonprofit environment
  • Possesses experience working with news organizations, online, print and broadcast media outlets, and successfully securing media coverage
  • Is committed to working on issues related to minority health and public health
  • Has excellent writing, speaking and editing skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex and technical information to different audiences
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to be innovative and creative
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Is committed to producing the highest quality work and remaining on the cutting edge of their area of expertise
  • Is self-directed and able to work independently with little supervision
  • Is capable of meeting tight deadlines, managing multiple projects and prioritizing workload
  • Is able to work occasional evening and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in health or communications related discipline
  • Experience working with minority/multi-cultural media
  • Prior experience working as a journalist, reporter or blogger
  • Language skills (Bilingual English/Spanish fluency, preferred)
  • Knowledge of digital and social media strategies

Work Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment
